Families Worth Mentioning

There are some amazing families that are going to great lengths to make their lifestyles more environmentally friendly, and toting their children along with them on the ride. They are a true testament that with a little bit of creativity, commitment and passion anything can truly be accomplished.

Zero-Waste Johnsons

Not long ago, Sunset Magazine did a feature on a family in California who has zero-waste for the weekly trash pick-ups. The Johnsons follow some set practices to keep waste out of their home and simplicity in it. For instance, they shop the bulk bins with reusable containers, only have books from the library and only allow new toys in their home that will fit into 4 set bins. To follow their journey, click here.

What can you incorporate in your home to be more like the Johnsons?

- Limit the number of toys you purchase and donate old toys

- Buy from the bulk bins and bring your own reusable containers

- Create an indoor garden

Garden Pool

In Mesa, AZ a family of four has converted their unused backyard swimming pool into an almost self-sustaining eco-system that provides them with their daily meals. Their pool has been converted into a greenhouse, is off the grid, is a home for chickens and tilapia and a multitude of plants. For the full story on this amazing feat, click here.

How Can You Start Growing Your Own Food?

- Plant even a small, raised garden

Car-less in Seattle

After their son wrecked their only car, this family of 5 decided to experiment with living car-less. For one full year, the family managed to live their life near Seattle, WA without owning a car. The times they did use transportation it was in the form of carpools, flexcars or a few borrowed cars for an average of 7 miles a day. Check out their story here.

Can Your Family Go Car-less or Reduced-Car?

- Experiment!

- Walk or bike to as many places as possible

- Carpool whenever you are able

- Carshare when necessary
