California Baby
California Baby brand soaps and skincare was started in 1995 by new mom, Jessica Iclisoy. "True to our toxin-free, sustainability-focused roots, we steer clear of Diethanolamine (DEA), sulfates, dyes, numbing agents, and ingredients that can trigger allergies in young ones or chemically sensitive adults, including synthetic fragrances, dairy, soy, peanuts and gluten. Our strict standards ensure that all of our products are CA Prop 65 compliant, which means they contain no carcinogens such as 1-4 Dioxane or phthalates. Our essential oils are third party tested for purity." Visit their website for purchasing and store locators.

What's In Our Skincare?
Many of our mainstream skin and haircare items, including sunscreen, have chemicals that have recently been under scrutiny for causing harm and illness. So when choosing skin or haircare items for your family, which chemicals should you avoid? Below is a list of harmful and beneficial ingredients to look for when making your purchases.

Sunscreen
For years we have been told by our parents and doctors to lather up with sunscreen when going outdoors. Now, the chemicals found in many sunscreens are being linked to illness and cancer. Here are a few tips to protect your family's skin from the sun and to reduce chemical exposure.

Look for shade, wear hats and protective clothing |

Stay out of sun in peak hours |

For short stays in the sun, take the opportunity to soak in Vitamin D. Keep infants covered! |

Baby's skin is far more sensitive to the sun! Keep them in the shade and avoid sunscreen use until recommended by your pediatrician. If under age 1, take your baby to the doctor if he or she is showing any signs of sunburn. |

Avoid harmful ingredients in sunscreen such as PABA, Oxybenzone, and Benzophenone. Mineral based (Zinc and Titanium) are considered safer for use. |

Try natural options to boost protection from UV rays. Green Tea Polyphenols has been shown to provide internal and external protection. Consumption of coconut, broccoli, avocado and superfoods such as algae, chlorella and spirulina help promote UV protection from within. Application of black tea gel has been shown to protect skin from sunburn. |
Whole Foods Is Joining the Fight Against Mislabeled Cosmetics
