Origins of Earth Day
Earth Day was founded in 1970 by the Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson. The initial goal of Earth Day was to create a teach-in specializing in environmental topics. It was the beginning of the modern environmental movement. For more information, click here.
Eco-Friendly Family Tips
With so much to think about as parents, it is often overwhelming to consider spending more time concentrating on saving our world. However, as families there are small every-day activities we can incorporate to reduce our waste and footprints. Here are just a few:
RIDE BICYCLES
No need to go out and purchase expensive new bikes. Visit the Bicycle Kitchen or the Bicycle Oven to repair your old gear or purchase second-hand bicycles.
USE CLOTH DIAPERS
While many of my friends warned me that cloth diapering would be more headache than I could manage with a newborn (even though they had not tried it themselves), I was determined to make it work for our busy family. What I found was cloth diapering like our parents knew is a thing of the past. The outershells are colorful and hip and the washing instructions are simple. Visit CottonBabies.com to purchase all the needed items and CharlieSoap.com for a non-residue laundry soap. Look for more information on cloth diapering in upcoming newsletters.
PACK REUSABLE DRINK CONTAINERS
Rather than spending $1.25 here and $2.50 there for wasteful plastic bottles of water, save money and the environment by packing a reusable water bottle in your diaper bag or car. Not only are you reducing the amount of plastic that has to find a home in the landfills or recycle centers, the water quality is most likely better. Did you know most bottled water is tap-water quality? Don't forget to go BPA free when choosing a water bottle. I recommend Klean Kanteen.
COMPOST
Material that could otherwise be compostable makes up over 50% of what an average family sends to the landfill each week the truck comes for pickup. Did you know Los Angeles offers seminars on composting and discounted compost bins when you attend? Click here for more information.
BUY ORGANIC
We have all heard the hype around organic food, but is it really that important to buy organic? Here are 5 reasons why organic is worth the extra pennies:
1. Meats and Dairy products are free of antibiotics, added hormones, GMO feed and other drugs
2. Factory farming puts tremendous strain on our natural resources. According to one resource I read, organic farms use 70% less energy than industrial farms by managing pests and disease in natural manners and creating sustainable ecosystems for future crops and livestock.
3. More human and ethical treatment of animals.
4. It tastes better. Organic produce, especially from local farms where it sees your plate the fastest and freshest just simply tastes better.
5. Buying from local farmers helps promote our community and local economy. To find out where your nearest Farmer's Market is, click here.
MANAGE PESTS AND DIRT WITHOUT CHEMICALS
So buying organic is good, but what about the chemicals not just on our food, but what we use in our homes to clean our dishes, floors, bathrooms and those to keep nasty bugs away? How do these chemicals affect our family's overall health? Are there alternatives? Try a 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/4 cup baking soda (or 2 tsps borax) mixed with 1/2 gallon of water. Add a few drops of Rosemary essential oil for a fresh smell and put in a standard spray bottle. This is an excellent all-purpose cleaner without the nasty chemicals and residue. Did you also know that to reduce the flea population in your home, you can plant fleabane in your garden? Or was your animals with a citrus solution to kill fleas instantly? Click here for more information.
